As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,161 people, 476 households, and 318 families residing in the town. The population density was 225.3/km (582.2/mi). There were 545 housing units at an average density of 105.7/km (273.3/mi). The racial makeup of the town was 96.64% White, 1.64% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.

There were 476 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% were non-families. 29.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.91.
